Catalytic Converter Stolen on Westlake

When:  Sometime in early October.
Where:  Parked near 2770 Westlake Ave. N.
What:  "I have lived on my dock for 25 years now. I have been broken into countless and I mean countless times.  I have had my two cars broken into twice this year.  This past week my catalytic converter was hack sawed off from underneath my toyota truck. The value is in the metal.  I have passed a letter to my neighbors suggesting a security patrol and am waiting for a response. My research has found that if I can get 20 to 25 people to chip in $30 dollars a month we can have someone stop by three times a night between the hours of 12:00 to 5:00 in the morning.  I have called many many times to the police department and I personally have not found any reduction in car theft."

Two Car Break-Ins on Portage Bay

When:  Sometime during the night of Thursday, September 4th and again during the night of Monday, September 8th.
Where:  3235 Fairview Ave. E.
What:  "I’m sorry to spoil the good news (referencing the September Dock Watch claiming there was no crime that month), but I did actually have two break-ins to my old ’89 Honda Accord last month at/near my houseboat.  On Sept. 5th AM. I got a call from a rower at the Pocock Rowing Center on Fuhrman saying he had found my appointment book on the ground near there.  On the 4th P.M. I had parked my car across the street from the center.  I thought maybe I dropped my book, but I soon discovered that my car had been rifled through (glove compartment open, etc.)  No glass was broken, but I am almost positive that I locked my car, even remember re-checking it as I left.  This has happened before, and a policeman once told me that there are keys out there that unlock Hondas.  The next week on the morning of the 9th, I discovered that the back triangle window of my car had been smashed.  My car was parked in the parking lot of the office bldg. next door to us close to the street.  Nothing was stolen, but those little windows cost as much as a windshield!  My husband and I have both had our cars stolen in the past, with evidence of drug usage in them upon recovery of the vehicles.  My husband has an alarm now, and I have a club."
Reported To:  SPD.

"By the way, last night at 10:30 I went out to move my car from next door to my parking spot and was stopped by a patrol car!  I had a nice visit with the officer."

Letter to the community from Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske regarding Mayor Nickels’ budget plan for 2009 – 2010.

September 29, 2008

Dear Seattle Resident and Business Owner:

Mayor Greg Nickels this afternoon presented his budget to the City Council, and I want to take this opportunity to compliment the Mayor for his remarks related to the Seattle Police Department. As we prepare to face the financial challenges ahead of us, I am grateful that the budget continues to reflect his priority on keeping Seattle safe and commitment to the men and women of the department.

I am equally grateful for his leadership on the Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative, which is a balanced approach that carefully focuses on preventing youth violence. This recognition that enforcement alone is not an answer to keeping our youth and community safe should be heralded and supported. SPD has increased its focus on responding to youth violence but as importantly, we are a key partner with public and private groups to keep kids from getting in trouble, particularly those most at risk. Building on the strong partnerships we have developed with many of you, I am pleased to announce that this summer we entered into an understanding with the Seattle Public Schools to strengthen our best practices in intervention, prevention and response activities to protect the students, including our assistance in classes that educate youth about DUI, traffic safety, anti-violence, and drug and alcohol. The key players to carry out this role will be the precinct's Community Police Teams and dedicated officers assigned to certain schools located in southeast, southwest and central Seattle.

One constant effort we will continue with is our aggressive recruiting campaign. The recent signing of the Seattle Police Officers' Guild contract, which makes Seattle police officers the best paid in Washington, will allow us to implement the five-year Neighborhood Policing Plan as scheduled by hiring 154 additional officers through 2012 to provide faster police response and smarter use of resources.

Another key element found in the Mayor's budget is our work to enforce parking restrictions and regulations. We will be adding 10 more parking enforcement positions to further ensure traffic safety and proper parking in Seattle.

The entirety of Mayor Nickels budget speech can be found at www.seattle.gov/mayor.

Sincerely,

Chief R. Gil Kerlikowske
