Seattle's Locks and Ship Canal Book Launch at MOHAI

Living right on the Lake Washington Ship Canal means the constant movement of the water, the locks, and the bridges is just a normal part of our day. But how often do we stop to think about how this entire landscape was carved out?

This March, a new book is hitting the shelves that dives into that exact history. “Seattle’s Locks and Ship Canal: A History and Guide” is a fresh, portable take on the massive engineering efforts that reshaped our city’s waterways. It’s essentially a distilled version of the acclaimed Waterway, redesigned to be the kind of guide you actually keep on your boat or by the window to help make sense of the history right outside your door.

Meet the Authors

Authors Jennifer Ott and David B. Williams are hosting a talk and book signing at MOHAI to mark the release. If you've ever been curious about the visionaries (and the sheer labor) that built the canal system we live on today, this is the event for you.

  • Date: Tuesday, March 24

  • Time: Doors open at 6:00 PM

  • Location: MOHAI (Museum of History & Industry)

  • The Details: You can find more info and RSVP via the UW Press Events Page.

Whether you’ve been on the docks for decades or you’re just getting your sea legs, it’s a great excuse to get together and learn a bit more about our unique corner of Seattle.
