Smarter Pipe Freeze Protection

Phyllis Hatfield recently shared a small device that might help protect outdoor water lines during cold snaps — and it could be worth trying for houseboaters.

The Freeze Miser is a temperature-activated faucet protector that attaches to an outdoor spigot and works like a thermostat. It senses the water temperature inside the pipe and only releases a small amount of water when it drops below about 37°F, helping prevent freezing without the constant drip many of us use.

Installation is simple: screw it onto the faucet, turn the water on, and it does the rest — no power, batteries, or tools required. The units cost roughly $30–$40 each, with multi-packs available.

Phyllis installed them before a recent freeze and reported that her lines stayed protected. It’s inexpensive, easy, and may reduce both water waste and utility costs.
